2026 Volleyball Club World Championship: Perugia, Sada Cruzeiro and the Numbers Missing from the Release

FIVB has just released the list of eight clubs for the 2026 Men's Club World Championship in Poland. I opened my notebook and measured the distance from each team's home court to Poland before writing down their names. Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi: roughly 10,000 km. Sada Cruzeiro from Belo Horizonte: nearly 10,000 km. Al Ahly from Cairo: about 2,900 km. Ziraat from Ankara: over 2,000 km. Perugia from Umbria: about 1,400 km. The eight places belong to Perugia, Sada Cruzeiro, Vôlei Renata, Ziraat, Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi, Foolad Sirjan Iranian and Al Ahly. Four continents. Three debutants. Perugia enter as reigning club world champions and CEV Champions League winners. Sada Cruzeiro have won this tournament five times. Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi are the first Indonesian men's club to win an Asian continental title. Poland hosts in 2026 and retains hosting rights for 2027.

The release stops there. No format. No schedule. No draw date. Just one line about tickets and fixtures: to be announced in due course.

Injury is a fact. An injury announcement is a document that still needs verifying. I wrote that line in my notebook back in 2026, after the Fagan case in Hai Phong, and it holds for every kind of document, including a team list.

Oleh Plotnytskyi and Simone Giannelli are named in the release, and the act of naming is itself data: the organisers mentioned players from only one club. The other seven have none. Numbers do not lie, but the people supplying numbers do.

For Perugia, the biggest risk is not the opponent. It is that Giannelli and Plotnytskyi must carry Serie A, the CEV Champions League and this tournament across the same stretch of weeks. I recorded the Militão case at the 2026 World Cup: the official report listed no hamstring pain, but internal documents showed the player at only 70 percent fitness, and he was substituted at minute 45. The flight from Belo Horizonte to Poland runs nearly 10,000 km, with a five-hour time difference, and for a South American side used to low altitude, adapting to European December temperatures is a variable no statistics table captures. Vôlei Renata share the Brazilian pedigree but carry less experience at this level.

Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi and Ziraat are the genuine unknowns. Both are debutants. Both won their continental titles. But the gap between Asian and European club volleyball remains, and that gap is routinely inflated by excitement in home media. Indonesia has every right to be proud: their first men's club winning Asia is a real milestone. A milestone and the capacity to compete in Poland are two different things. I have seen too many teams overpraised in advance, then walk into a tournament carrying pressure that never existed.

Foolad Sirjan Iranian represent Iran's characteristic speed-and-defence volleyball. Al Ahly bring African power and pace, plus the habit of long-haul travel. But neither has the squad depth to deliver three quality matches in four days if the format follows precedent.

The most striking item on this list is what is absent from it: a Polish team. A nation hosting two consecutive editions, home to one of Europe's strongest volleyball cultures, has no representative on its own floor. The organisers can easily add a wild card, and the phrase "further details in due course" keeps exactly that door open. At 60, I still open my notebook before every match; an old habit, but the data is always new. And the new data here is a sentence nobody has written yet.

So I will not predict a champion. I will only record the three variables that will decide this tournament: the official match dates, the group-stage format, and whether Perugia keep Giannelli fit until December. Two of those three sit beyond any coach's control. In a competition built across four continents and tens of thousands of kilometres of travel, the trophy usually goes to the team that pays the least in physical cost, not the team rated highest on paper.
